From diagnosis to treatment: the promise of therapeutic genomics

A new article by Vahid Aslanzadeh reflects on a talk by Professor Stephan Sanders, Director of the MRC CoRE in Therapeutic Genomics, at the UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative Scientific Symposium 2026.

The article considers how the principles that transformed genetic diagnosis, including shared data, automation and reusable technologies, could now be applied to the development of genetic therapies. Rather than creating every treatment from the beginning, therapeutic genomics seeks to develop tested platforms that can be adapted for different genetic conditions.

It also discusses the need for open research resources and regulatory approaches that recognise what can be learned from earlier treatments using the same platform.
